General Notes: Articles: The Donwens The following article pulls together the various birth and death dates, family names and other pieces of information in narrative form. The objective is to make your family history easier to understand. Donwen The name Donwen/Donven
How and Why the name Changed
The Name Donwen/Donven: It appears the name Donven originated in the small landlocked Country of Luxembourg. This is evidenced by the two Luxembourg villages of Oberdonven and Neiderdonven (Upper donven and Lower donven) in the Flaxweiler region. It is possible that these two villages were either named after our original Donwen ancestors, or that the Donwens came from these villages. Naming conventions in Europe have people both named after the areas where they live, or for towns or villages to be named for the people who live there. Founded in 963, Luxembourg became a grand duchy in 1815 and an independent state under the Netherlands. It lost more than half of its territory to Belgium in 1839, but gained a larger measure of autonomy. Full independence was attained in 1867. In the Letzeburgesch language, which is a prevailing Low German dialect, the duchy is called Letzeburg. French is the official language, German is taught in schools, and English is also widely spoken. How and Why the name Changed: In Luxembourg the name is spelled Don"v"en and pronounced Don"v"en (English "v"). In Germany the name is spelled Don"w"en but pronounced Don"v"en (English "v"). The German "w" is pronounced similar to the English "v". (The German "v" is pronounced similar to the English "f") In America the name is spelled Don"w"en and pronounced Don"w"en. (English "w"). See the following chart which demonstrates the spelling and pronunciation differences in each country. Country Spelled Pronounced Luxembourg Donven Donven "v" Germany Donwen Donven "v" America Donwen Donwen "w" At some time since the family's arrival in America the pronunciation has changed to the way we say it now, Donwen. (English "w") I suspect that the original pronunciation of the name in America was Don"v"en (English "v"), as the Illinois records for the marriage of John Donwen and Mary Schmidt records John's surname as Donovan (sounds closer to Don"v"en than to Don"w"en). Errors in the spelling of names on public records is not uncommon. Many names were written as they sounded, often the individual concerned could not read or write and was therefore not able to correct the mistake. Donwen in Europe: Matthias and Elisabet: The first Donwen we have record of is Matthias Donven. Matthias was the husband of Elisabet Hoffman, these two lived in Lenningen, Luxembourg.

Johann married Margaret Zollwer in 1848 in Germany, daughter of Johann Zolwer and Margaretha Thiel. Margaret was born on 23 Mar 1829 in Wincheringen, Germany and died on 14 Jan 1895 in Wincheringen, Germany at age 65.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 3 F    i. Susanna Donwen was born in 1848 in Wincheringen, Germany.

+ 4 F    ii. Maria Donwen was born in 1850 in Wincheringen, Germany.

Jackson Couple Observes Golden Wedding
Mr and Mrs John Donwen Entertained Many Guests at Their Home in Highland Park.
Children Served Four Course Dinner at Noon
Open House Kept During Afternoon and Evening when Friends Called on Honored Couple
The privilege of spending fifty years of happy wedded life together comes to but few of the citizens of Jackson, however, two of our city's most honored and beloved residents enjoyed that distinction on Sunday, when Mr and Mrs John Donwen celebrated the anniversary of their golden wedding surrounded by their children and many friends.
For many weeks the celebration of this great privilege had been uppermost in the minds of the children of Mr and Mrs Donwen, and during the whisperings and preparations, it is not a wonder that the curiosity of the parents had not been somewhat attracted by the secrecy as their children went about making plans for the gala affair.
While January 12th was the exact date for celebrating the happy event, it was decided that Sunday would be more appropriate in order that all of the children and their families might be present to join in the happy festivities, so Sunday, January 14th, was set for the celebration and it is certain that the date will long linger in the minds of Mr and Mrs Donwen and their excellent family as a happy memory in the years that are yet before them.
Fifty years marks a long span in life's journey, yet from the sparkle in the eyes of the honored couple, life had been years of sweetness and joy since the day, long ago, that Mr Donwen led his young bride to the alter when they plighted their vows to love and honor, promised that have been well kept during the succeeding years that have intervened. Years of good citizenship, service to their loved ones, their country, and the community that they have honored by calling home.
To raise a family of excellent boys and girls, to be of service to their neighbours, is a mission of fifty years that Mr and Mrs Donwen can look backward to without a single regret, indeed, a wonderful accomplishment, and a source of supreme happiness and content that will make the years yet to come restful and pleasant in the knowledge that they have given their full measure of duty to home, country and friends.
The program of the happy celebration opened Sunday at eight o'clock at Saint Wenceslaus' Catholic church when high mass was sung in their honor, the Rev. A. V. Duda, pastor. Having charge of the service. The church was decorate in yellow and white with large bouquets of chrysanthemums in evidence. During the mass Miss Josephine Pribyl sang "Ave Maria" accompanied on the violin by Mr Albert Blizek, with Mrs Harold Maloney presiding at the pipe organ. Following the services at the church the Donwen party went to the home of their son, William on Terrace Drive, where a wedding breakfast was served.
The Donwen home in Highland Park was also prettily decorated in gold and white, and at noon fifty three relatives were present at a delicious four course dinner served by the children of Mr and Mrs Donwen. The colors of gold and white were used throughout the entire menu. Mr Kiley of Cullom, Illinois acted as toastmaster at which time responses and congratulations were extended.
The afternoon was spent in visiting and at which time Mr and Mrs Donwen were the recipients of many beautiful gifts in remembrance of the happy occasion, together with numerous telegrams and letters of congratulation.
John Donwen was born at Wincheringen, Germany, October 6 1855, and immigrated to America in 1882. Miss Mary Schmidt was born in Alsace Lorraine, Germany, on July 12 1860, and to their union twelve children were born, four of whom are deceased. The children were all present to assist their parents in celebrating their golden wedding with the exception of Mrs. S Weisenhofer of Hastings, Michigan, who was unable attend. Those present were J. P. Donwen, Enterprise township; N.F. Donwen, Des Moines township; Mrs L. J. Soucek, Minneapolis; William Donwen, Jackson; Mrs O. E. Verdick, Wisconsin township; Mrs Joe Maras, Enterprise township.
Mr and Mrs Donwen came to Jackson county in 1911 from their home in Illinois, and settled on a farm in the Wisconsin township, but in 1920 retired from the farm and purchased their present beautiful home in Highland Park, where friends and neighbours will hope they may live many years of continued happiness.
Other guest and relatives who attended the celebration Sunday were James Bergan and daughter, Miss Mary of Harvey, Illinois; William Schafroth of Cabery, Illinois, who was present at Mr and Mrs Donwen's wedding fifty years ago; Miss Adelaide Soucek of Minneapolis; Mr and Mrs R J Kiley and son Eugene of Cullom, Illinois; Mrs May Bitz of Minneapolis; Mr and Mrs Albert Benson and sons, Roland and Richard of Fairibault.
Mr and Mrs Donwen held open house at their home in Highland Park from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 o'clock during which time many friends called t extend to them hearty congratulations.
The Pilot can think of none among it's large circle of friends in Jackson county that are more worthy of the zens than Mr and Mrs Donwen, and honors received by these splendid citizens is happy at this time to join with hundreds of other friends in wishing them continued health and happiness.

John married Mary Anne Schmidt on 12 Jan 1884 in Cabery, Kankakee Co., IL, daughter of Florinc Schmidt and Anna Mary Smith. Mary Anne was born on 12 Jul 1860 in Garbourg, Germany, died on 27 Oct 1942 in Jackson, Jackson Co., MN at age 82, and was buried on 30 Oct 1942 in Good Shepherd Cemetery Jackson, MN.

Death Summons Beloved Pioneer Citizen Thursday
John Donwen Passed Away at Highland Park Home After Several Months of Illness
Funeral Services were Held Monday Morning
Highly Esteemed by Many Admiring Friends: Will be Missed Among His Neighbours
Seldom has a death occurred in Jackson that created more universal sorrow than when the news that John Donwen had passed away at the Donwen family residence, 208 Emily Street, Thursday, May 1, following several months of declining health, largely caused by his advanced age.
Mr. Donwen was a gentleman widely known for his pleasing personality and splendid citizenship, in fact it was an honour to enjoy his acquaintance an share in the goodwill he contributed to the community in which for many years he had been a leading citizen. Not only was Mr. Donwen active in church circles, but he also was always ready and willing to assist in any worthy cause that had for it's purpose the making of Jackson a better and more progressive city.
For many years the Donwen family resided in the Wisconsin township community where Mr. Donwen was engaged in farming, but in 1920 he decided to retire from the farm and when the Donwen's purchased the beautiful home in Highland Park where they have since resided and where they were beloved by their neighbours and friends, in fact to have know the Donwens and to have been privileged to be their friends was indeed a distinctive honour.
Probably one of the happiest of epochs enjoyed in the long and busy lives of Mr. and Mrs. Donwen, was the privilege on January 12, 1934, of celebrating the anniversary of their golden wedding and when their children and neighbours joined with them in a day of real celebration, indeed, a pleasant memory that will long be treasured by their children in the future years.
John Donwen was born at Wincheringen, Prussia, Germany, October 6, 1855, immigrating to American in 1882, when he settled at Cabery, Illinois, and where on January 12, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Schmidt. They made their home on a farm near Cabery until 1912when they came to Jackson County. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Donwen was blessed with the birth of twelve children, eighth of which, together with Mrs. Donwen, survive a kind husband and indulgent father. The children are John Donwen, Nick Done, William Donwen, Mrs. Albert Blizek, Mrs. Joseph Maras of Jackson; Mrs. Louis Soucek of Minneapolis; Mrs. S. Weisenhofer of Hastings, Michigan; and Mrs. O. E. Verdick of Alpha. Three daughters and one son preceded their father in death.
Funeral services were held from the home Monday morning at 8.30 and from the St. Wenceslaus' Catholic church of which the deceased was a devout member, at 9 o'clock, with Rev. Father Felton officiating, and at which time many beautiful floral tributes were in evidence as testimony of the high standing in which Mr. Donwen was held by his many neighbours and friends. Pallbearers were George Bender, Frank Fiala, Ray Lockner, Peter Verdick, Laurence Lansing and Louis Dostal. Burial was held in the family lot in the Catholic Cemetery.
Out of town relatives and friends attending the service were Mrs. James Hagerty, Harvey, Illinois William Schafroth, Kankakee, Illinois' James Bergan, Mr. and Mrs. John Bergan and two sons, Ashkum, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Max Gatettenbauer, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schmidt, Rock Island, Illinois' Mr. and Mrs. Mat Boeson, Theodore Boeson, Des Moines, Iowa; Edith Donwen, Winona; Evonne Verdick, Rochester; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Soucek, Gertrude and Jerome, Minneapolis.

County Soldier meets death in Railway Accident.
Albert F Donwen of Near Alpha Met Tragic Death in France on November 20th
Having been gassed on his birthday and then killed in a railroad accident in France just as he had started his homeward journey after leaving the hospital, is the sad fate which overtook one of Jackson County's stalwart young soldier boys.
Mr and Mrs. John Donwen, residing near Alpha, received a message from the war department last Thursday Dec 26, conveying the sad information that their son Private Albert F Donwen of the American Expeditionary Forces, had been killed in a railroad accident in France on Nov. 20.
Albert left with the February draft contingent from Martin County for Dodge, later being transferred to Camp Logan, Colorado, and sailed from Long Island, N.Y., on May 9, for service overseas. He was in the 129th Infantry, 33rd Division.
Albert was gassed on his birthday, Oct. 5. He had just been released from the hospital and was on his way home when he met his death in the railroad accident.
Albert Frederick Donwen was the third son of Mr and Mrs John Donwen. He was born at Cabery, Ford County, Illinois, Oct 5 1892. He came to Minnesota with his parents in February 1912. Besides his parents, he leaves seven sisters and four brothers to mourn his loss (siblings named in report).
In the death of Private Albert Donwen, Jackson County mourns the loss of another one of it's brave soldier boys. The news of his tragic death came as a severe blow to the family, and the sympathy of the entire community is extended to them in their great sorrow. - Jackson County Pilot
