Individual Note: Numerous census records on Martin Casner state he was born in Alabama.Hewas with his father in Tennessee in 1817, later in Alabama and thentoTexas. He raised cattle and operated a sawmill and gristmill onanother ofhis properties.
He was a Captain in the Cavalry Co., Blanco Co., 31st Brigade, TexasStateTroops when it was organized in October 1863, with a rank andfile of 39men.
In May of 1868 he left West Texas by covered wagon for California withhiswife, and 3 of his younger children, the families of his sonMartinVanburin Casner and family of 3, son-in-law Cal Putman's familyof 3, andthe William Littlepage family of five (Martin's wife wasMary JaneLittlepage). They arrived at the Warner Ranch outside ofJulian,California, Christmas Day 1868. Martin later purchased 160acres in theBallena Valley where he lived until his death.
