Individual Note: F.P. "Buster" Lewis
June 7, 1921 -June 18, 2004
Adult life started early for Buster when his father passed away when he was only 9 years old leaving him to help support his mom and 5 siblings during the depression years. He worked long and hard doing any odd labor he could find in the community of Holt in San Saba County. He continued this work ethic throughout his lifetime.
He served in World War II from 1941 to 1945 in the Pacific Theater as a radio operator. Returning home to San Angelo, he married Nelda Williams in 1946 and from that marriage had 3 children David Hoyt, Sharon and Anita.
He was an apprentice glazer for the Strickland Brothers. He then worked for Skinny Lupton at Angelo Glass before opening his own business, Ace Glass and Mirror, in 1957. Buster was one of the last in San Angelo to actually make his own mirrors.
The family then moved to Del Rio in 1968 where he continued glazing.
He married Maria "Nena" Perez Mercado and her children, Grace and Jimmy, in 1976. They owned and operated Arrow Glass starting in 1978 until his retirement in 1987.
He started working for Rick Isenhour in 1989 and continued working until shortly before his death. With the death of Maria in 1994, he worked harder than ever.
He had the ability to build or fix absolutely anything. He was especially talented on electrical work. Even with only a sixth grade education, Buster was self-taught on all that was required in his glazier and construction activities.
Buster was "Mr. Fix-it" He especially loved to work at his 3 favorite places, Blimpie's, Flamingo's and Golden Chick which included all the employees whom he considered his friends. He was often seen on top of the roof working on the neon lights at the young age of 81. Of course, his pride and joy, was the Isenhour ice plant which he maintained, babied, coaxed and invented any necessary part that it took to operate at the optimum capacity.
Buster's second home was the donut shop with a cup of coffee, friends and a string of jokes.
Buster never met a stranger, a smile was always on his face and a joke or two always followed. He loved to laugh and made sure others laughed with him.
Buster is survived by his son, David Hoyt Lewis and his wife Betty of Presidio, daughter Sharon Lewis Reidy and husband Rick of Mertzon, daughter Anita Lewis Sonberg of Dripping Springs, stepdaughter Grace Mercado-Marx and husband Ken of Fort Worth and stepson Jimmy Mercado of San Antonio. Grandchildren are Delane Abbot and husband Craig, LaDon Erskine and husband David, Jerri Parry, Jason Wankowski, Cynthia Mercado, Richard Mercado and fianc? Priscilla Moreno and Annette Mercado. He is survived by his sisters, Ruth Cunningham and Lucille Hardman and 8 great-grandchildren.
Buster was preceded in death by his siblings Nell Ball, Winston Lewis and Juanita Frost and his second wife, Maria Lewis.
Pallbearers are Jason Wankowski, David Erskine, Craig Abbott, Richard Mercado, Richard Isenhour and Rick Isenhour.
Special thanks to Kerrville Veterans Hospital, Dr Scott, Creig and James of the Gold Team, Dr Shimotsu, Diane and April of ICU and the staff of 5B. Buster advanced from the Red Team to the Gold Team and is now on the Heaven Team.
Visitation is Sunday, June 20, 2004 at Del Rio Funeral Home from 1 pm to 9 pm. Service is at Del Rio Funeral Home on Monday, June 21, 2004 at 10 am with burial following at Del Rio Memorial Park.
