His father died when he was nine or ten years old and, by his own exertions, he entered college at Annapolis, Md., and received the degree of A.M. In 1826 he published the Symbolical Spelling-book, which was widely used; this was followed by his Panorama of Professions and Trades, Philadelphia, 1836. Afterward he published a grammar, which was his most successful work; it is said to have revolutionized the teaching of this subject. He also published a Speller and Definer to take the place of the cumbrous dictionary studied in the schools. He is said to have been one of the best philologists of his day, and was a familiar figure in New York City and vicinity, where he visited schools, conducting classes in his Grammar. He spent his declining years in Davenport, Iowa.[HazenGary.FTW]
