EXCERPTS FROM THE JOURNAL OF THE REV. RICHARD MATHER
ON THE "JAMES" IN 1635
Published in
"Search for the Passengers of the Mary & John,
1630,
Volume 20,
West Country Ships and Passengers
1620 - 1643,
by the Mary & John Clearing House
The Reverend Richard Mather came to Dorchester, MA in 1635, with agroupof
people who settled largely in that town. In that year, manyofthepeoplewho
came on the "Mary & John" in 1630 and settled Dorchester, began movingto
Windsor, CT. They sold their houses and lands to many of Mather'speople.
Rev. Mather sailed from Bristol, on the "James", as didthe"AngelGabriel". Both ships were anchored near the Maine coast onAugust15,when they were hit by a terrible storm. The "James" barelyescapedbeingdriven onto the rocks onthe Isle of Shoales but the"Angel Gabriel"wasnot so fortunate and it broke up on the rocks ofthe island. Rev.Matherkept a journal in which he described some ofthe experiences ofthepassengers on this voyage. Also aboard the"James"was Henry WoodwardofDorchester, MA and Michael Mitchell ofCharlestown, MA.
Following are some excerpts:
JUNE 22 - Five ships sailed from Bristol, three bound forNewfoundland:the150
ton "Diligence", the 80 ton "Mary" and the "Bess" (or Elizabeth)andtwobound for New England; the 240 ton "Angel Gabriel" and the220ton"James".
JUNE 25 - In the evening they lost sight of the three shipsboundforNewfoundland, but the master of the "James" thought it besttostaywiththe "Angel Gabriel" bound for New England, rather than toleaveher andgo to the ships bound for New Foundland. The "AngelGabriel"was a strongship, well armed with fourteen or sixteen cannons, and thecrew desiredher company. However, she was slow and sometimesthe"James" went withthree sails less thanshe could have used.
JUNE 29 - In the afternoon captain Taylor went aboard the"AngelGabriel"and he took Matthew Michell and Rev. Richard Mather withhim. They foundmuch sickness aboard and two cases of small pox, butthelatter wererecovered. They had supper with the ship's master andhadgood cheese, boiled mutton, roasted turkey and good sack.
JULY 14 - The sea was rough, many were seasick and no one could goupondeck because of the tossing and tumbling of the ship. They lostsightofthe "Angel Gabriel" sailing slowly behind them and they neversawheragain.
AUGUST 14 - At 10 o'clock at night they dropped anchor at theIsleofShoales and there "slept sweetly the night until daybreak",
AUGUST 15 - They were hit by a terrible storm, with rain andeasterlywind. In the morning they lost three great anchors and cables. The thirdcablewas cut to save the ship. "We had no outward means ofdeliverancebut byloosing sail, if so we might get, to the sea fromamongst theislands androcks where, we anchored". Their sails: weresplit in piecesas if theywere rotten rags. At one point they thoughtthey would beblown onto therocks and thought only God could savethem. Suddenly a newfresh galeappeared and they continued southwestby west towards CapeAnne. "When newswas brought to us in the gun roomthat the danger waspast, oh how ourhearts did then relent and meltwithin us And how weburst into tears ofjoy amongst ourselves, inlove onto our gracious God,and admiration of hiskindness in grantingto his poor servants such anextraordinary andmiraculous deliverance. His holy name be blessedforever".
AUGUST 16 - 'This day we went directly before the wind, and haddelightallalong the coast as we went,in viewing Cape Anne, the bay ofSaugust, thebay of Salem, Marblehead and other places and came toanchor at lowtide atNantasket, in a most pleasant harbor, like to suchI have neverseen, amongst a great many lands on every side. Aftertheeveningexercise, whenit was flowing tide again, we set sail and camethe nightto anchor againbefore Boston and so rested
