Death of Robert M. Combs
The Remains Brought From Arizona for Interment Here
Robert M. Combs died at Phoenix, Ariz., the 14th instant, and theannouncement was a great shock to his many friends in Washington. Mr.Combs had been in delicate health, and left here for Arizona about a yearago, in the hope that the climate there would be of benefit to him. For atime he improved, and his letters to friends here were very encouraging,but a sudden and unexpected hemorrhage terminated fatally.
Mr. Combs was a young man of much promise and a member of one ofWashington's oldest families. He had a host of friends here. His remainsarrived in the city this morning, and the funeral ceremonies will takeplace tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Congressional cemetery.

At about the age of 16, he converted to God in a Methodistprayer meeting.Soon afterward, under a sense of divine calling,he began preaching. Hewas received into the Champlainconference of the Wesleyan MethodistConnection in the year1861, and was ordained an elder at Weybridge,Vermont, in thefollwing year. He received his first appointment in 1861,beingsent to the Macomb charge, where he served for two years. He wasthefirst pastor to serve at the Second Wesleyan MethodistChurch in NorthStockholm, St. Lawrence County, New York and heafterwards served aspastor at the following charges, thusrendering to the church of hischoice a pastoral service for theconsecutive term of 36 years: Mooers,NY, four year Mendon, VT, two years Readsboro, VT, three years Brookdale,NY, two years returned to Readsboro, VT for another term of three yearsSyracuse, NY, three years Pratham, NY, five years Morley, NY, six yearsWest Chazy, NY, four years and Hague, NY, two yearsRev. Jenkins wasprominently associated with the management ofConnectional affairs, havingserved as a member of several ofthe Connectional incorporated societiesfor upwards of twentyyears, and having been a member of several GeneralConferences.He was President of the General Conference at West Chazy,NewYork, from 1876 to 1878 and again from 1888 to 1897. He alsoserved asPresident of the Syracuse Conference, and in April1885 his sermonReciprocal Duties of the Ministry and People,which he delivered at theproceedings, was published at theattendees request. Rev. Jenkins wasinvolved in establishing the Wesleyan Methodistseminary in western NewYork State that came to be known asHoughton College. At a rededication ofthe Wesleyan Church inShort Tract, Allegheny County, in October 1882,Rev. DennisonSmith Kinney, Agent of the Educational Society of theWesleyanMethodist Connection, approached Willard J. Houghton with planstoestablish a first class seminary to serve the people ofwestern New Yorkand northern Pennsylvania. The seminary wasfounded in 1883 and the ledgerin which W.J. Houghton loggedfinancial contributions to the schoolcontains record of fourseparate gifts of $5 each by Rev. N.E. Jenkins andone latercontribution of $5 by Sr. N.E. Jenkins. The ledger ispresentlyhoused in the Willard J. Houghton Memorial LibraryArchives in Houghton,New York. Rev. Jenkins seems to have made life-long friends of severalofhis colleagues, many of whom were prominent in affairs of thechurch.Rev. Nathan Wardner, who served several terms aspresident of the regionalconferences, officiated at Noahssecond wedding in Mexico, Oswego County,New York. Mr. A.W.Hall, publishing agent for the denomination from 1890to 1907,wrote Rev. Jenkins obituary. Wardner, Hall, Jenkins, plusWillardJ. Houghton, were pallbearers at the funeral of theirfriend Rev. D.S.Kinney and his photograph is in the Jenkinsfamily photo album of 1880.Noah's first wife remains unidentified, but her picture remainsin thefamily photo album with the simple note First wife -- nochildren. Hemarried second on 9 January 1889, Hattie M.Avery, born 2 October 1856,died August 1924, in Mexico, OswegoCounty, New York. After Noah died,Hattie married Mr. Charles H.Brown, and she is buried in Pleasant LawnCemetery, Parish,Oswego Co., New York, with her parents as "wife of C.H.Brown." In the year 1897, because of declining health, he settled uponafarm near the village of Mexico, Oswego County, New York, whereheremained until his death. For two years prior to his death hewas in astate of mental and physical decline, eventuallyresulting in a stroke ofparalysis eight days before hispassing. The funeral services were held atthe family home andwere attended by his widow, Hattie, 16 year olddaughter, Josie,11 year old son, Noah, and a large gathering of friendsandcolleagues. The text for the sermon was Numbers 23:10: Let medie thedeath of the righteous, and let my last end be likehis. The remains weretaken to the village of Morley, St.Lawrence County, New York, forinterment, accompanied by thefamily.
