From the Book, "The Descendents of John Woodman - The Man fromOysterRiver"
Joshua was born 25 Oct 1703; when he was baptized with his family bytheReverend Hugh Adams, 14 Feb.. 1719/20, in the Oyster River Parish(nowDurham, NH.) he was recorded as an adult.
Joshua was twenty-nine years old when the town of Durham divideditscommon land on 18 Mar 1733/4, thus making him eligible to receiveafull share consisting of twenty-five acres. It was probably aroundthistime that he married Elizabeth, the daughter of John andElizabeth Doe wholived near the "Moat" on the backwaters of theLamprey River in thePacker's Falls' District of Durham. Elizabeth wasborn 16 Oct. 1700 andwas baptized at the new meeting house byReverend Hugh Adams 29 Nov. 1719.It is interesting to note thatJoshua's brother Edward Married Elizabeth'ssister Martha.
Elizabeth's father , John Doe, died without a will. On 24 April1742,John's widow and children, including Joshua and Elizabeth WoodmanandEdward and Martha Woodman notified the court they had mutuallyagreedas to the best way to divide John Doe's estate. Half of the Doehousewas given to the Widow Doe; the remainder was divided among thesixchildren. Joshua and Elizabeth received the east garret of thehouseand twenty- two acres of land. In 1745 they sold land toElizabeth'sbrother Benjamin Doe for sixty-three pounds, two shillings, six pence.A year later on 3 June Joshua sold his twenty-five acres ofcommonland to his brother Edward, with Elizabeth giving up herdower.Joshua's brothers John and Jonathan witnessed the deed.
When his father died in 1749, Joshua inherited one hundred acres inDurhamabove Packer's Falls of the Lamprey River. with the privilegeof thestream that ran to Packer's Falls Saw Mill. this was the landJohn got 10Nov. 1658, and the place where Joshua was living at thetime of hisfather's death. Joshua had his land perambulated 15 Jun1765. Elizabethdied 31 Jan 1755. Joshua next married Rachel Taylorthe widow of WilliamTaylor. This marriage must have occurred between30 Apr.. 1755 when RachelTaylor was appointed administratrix of herhusband's estate and 31 Dec1755 when Joshua and his wife RachelWoodman were granted a license tosell Taylor's Real estate.
The exact date of Joshua's death isn't known, but his will wasprobated 11Nov. 1778. By the time Joshua died he had already disposedof most of hishousehold furnishings. He owned no tools, no cookingutensils, Indeed, there was no furniture to equip any room except abedroom; and all hisfarming equipment was gone except the oxen. In1990 the house was owned byMr.. & Mrs. Robert Harter.
