     He was one of the earliest schoolmasters in Mendon, and let us hope, theyoungest for he beg a n teaching at fifteen. He was pround of thedistinction of having taught in his rude schoo lh ouse the alphebet to afuture college president--his own nephew, Stephen Chapin, afterward s President of Columbus College, Washington, D C.. In the Lexington Alarmof 1775 Adams sho ulde red a musket. He was thirty years Justice of thePeace and died at 82 in partiel menta l ecli pse brought on by the deathof his wife.

     Rhonda, 2nd daughter of Josiah and Rachel was born in that part of Mendonwhich in 1780 became Milford. She married Icchabod, son of AzariahNewton. They had four children, three of whom, with the father, diedwith in the short space of 16 days, leaving an infant Phebe, six monthsold. Rhonda lived a widow ten years and then married in Woburn toEbenezer Singletary, and moved to Hopkinton, taking little Phebe, thenbetween ten and eleven years old.
