History:The first school established in Belmont, Maine was in the year1808and was taught in the winter by Ezra Woodman and in the summer byMiss Mary Lesan. In later years a brick school house was built andtheteaching done by others.Between 1815 and 1830, Ezra bult several ofthe larger frame houses inthe vicinity of Belmont and North Belmont.Although active in theconstruction of homes during this time, his mainsource of income wasmaking and repairing wagon wheels. In his later yearshe no longer built houses; however, he did continueto build and repairwheels. Ezra was quite lame and required the useof two short canes toassist him in walking.

From "A Genealogical History of Morrill, Maine" by Theoda Mears Morse

Ezra Woodman was a native of New Hampshire. He kept the first winterschool in town. He was a lame man and got around on two canes, and was acarpenter and framer and also built wheels and wagons. He spent much timeand study making perpetual motion. His machine had lots of wheels, weights and pulleys, but he could not get it to go without stopping to beoiled. If he could have had some kind of modern lubricating oils it mighthave gone perpetually.
He invented the art of the machine for cutting profiles. They were madeby cutting out white paper, and putting black paper behind it. Put in aframe it made a pretty ornament to hang it the parlor. Most likely Mr.Daguerre got hold of this which led him to invent the daguerreotype.
