Helen Greer
May 02, 2007
Anna Helen Bullock Greer, a nearly 40-year resident of Magnolia Bluffs in Eastpoint, died peacefully at her home on Monday, April 16, 2007, in the arms of her beloved daughter-in-law, Linda. Born in Canajoharie in upstate New York, she was raised as an outdoorswoman. She maintained an active interest in the outdoors and wildlife all her life. She was a lieutenant in the Women's Army Air Corps in the 1940s when she met her future husband, William Greer. They married in March 1947, and were still together when he died in February 2005. As a result of her military service, she is a charter member of the Women's Memorial (Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation) in Washington, D.C. he was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. For the past 15 years, she served as a member of the board of directors of the Apalachicola Area Historical Society, including terms as the society's secretary. She also was president of the Philaco Club in Apalachicola from 1972 to 1976. Greer had more than 60 years of active involvement with the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of the Tallahassee Bonsai Society. She was patient; she was helpful; she was interesting; she was interested; she was fiercely independent; she knew an awful lot of stuff about a great many things; she was tough; she was funny; and she was wicked smart. She could-and did- do anything she set her mind to. In fact, anything a mere man could do, Helen Greer could do. Often better. She did not suffer fools gladly. Helen lived life on her own terms and on her own schedule. She even died when she wanted to - she set her 90th birthday as her deadline. She made it, of course, with several days to spare so she could savor her final act of will. nyone who truly knew Helen will never forget her. She is survived by her daughter, Katherine Nelson, and son-in-law William Nelson, of Fort Worth, TX; and her son, William Greer, and daughter-in-law Linda, of Ogden, UT. At her request, there will be no services. Anyone who wishes may make donations in Helen's name to Big Bend Hospice, Inc., Elaine Bartelt Center, 1723 Mahan Center Boulevard, Tallahassee, FL 32308-5428.
