Luna Munselle

Little is known of this daughter of L.D. Munselle and Phydelia Smith, but all of the  researchers have the come across the same notation in various family records.

"Luna married Bill Gregory and moved to Galveston and was never heard from again....

It is presumed that she and her family all died in the great Galveston hurricane of September 1900."

Luna Alice Munsell was born in 1860 in Licking Co Ohio. She married William Gregory in Jefferson Co Il on April 20, 1876. I believe William was son of Dr Lemuel Gregory and Kitty Brady of Jefferson County IL.

They had one child

Alta Gregory born 1878 In Jefferson Co, IL

I have not been able to prove or disprove this family tale.

I have checked a number of 1900 Galveston Hurricane historic sites and have not found any names among the known missing or dead that might be Luna and Bill.

The mystery continues......

Remembering the 1900 Storm ...

On September 8, 1900, a hurricane struck Galveston. Winds estimated at 140 mph swept over the island, leaving devistation in their wake. After the storm surge of 15.7 feet subsided, Galvestonians left their shelters to find 6,000 of the city's 37,000 residents dead and more than 3,600 buildings totally destroyed.

The 1900 Storm is still considered to be the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history. After the storm, Galveston constructed a seawall and raised the grade of the island to protect it from future hurricanes.
